My sustained investigation explores the dynamism of family. From the outside, a family might appear to be simply a household unit. However, my work delves into the complex layers of identity that shape a family. I explored the external layer of family image through painting a posed family portrait in photo realistic oil style. As I continued experimenting with this concept, I delved further into the both visible and emotional aspects of a family dynamic through the portrayal of familial relationships. In the oil paintings, I depicted candid moments of interaction between family members in a looser, more expressive style to capture the relaxed, genuine nature of personal relationships in my family. These interpersonal relationships manifest themselves in the works through expressive brushstrokes, warm colors on the subjects, and dynamic color choice. At the core, a family is made up of unique individuals. Delving deeper into the idea of not only the family unit but also how individuals shape a family, I explored solo pieces of myself and family members including more symbolic representations of personality such as floral symbolism and reflections.
